Creativity= the use of the imagination or original ideas, especially in the production of artistic work.
I love this.....
The phrase " the use of imagination or original ideas" fascinates me. In the past, these abilities have always defined artists, musicians, or writers, however these abilities are paramount in working in any field or simply living life. As it turns out, creativity opens people's minds, allows people to become better problem solvers, removes prejudices, and broadens people's perspective. I don't believe that there is anyone who disagrees that these qualities are negative. Having these creative qualities can only help one's relationships, work, communities and planet. In art, these creative qualities enable an artist to use her imagination and compose and create a piece of art that moves the viewer, listener or reader. As an artist progresses, originality starts to take root and new ideas bloom. Just imagine working, living or having your community led by that person-there would be endless possibilities. Creativity is good and helps a person live their life to the fullest.
Now this doesn't mean you must quit your day job and work endlessly to become a rich and famous artist ( collective sigh of relief from my family). That plan just adds stress to it all and causes the opposite effect that you are trying to achieve, unless of course that is your day job. I have been doing some form of painting or photography off and on since I was young. However for a couple of decades I did very little art due to work, and by very little I mean none. I felt my time and effort would be better spent working endless hours on my career. Looking back now, I can't help wondering what my life would have been like had I allowed myself some creative time. I have made a decision to make creativity my life now from now until I can no longer do so.
What can you do now? There are several creative activities you can do now depending on the amount of time available to you on a given day. I am mainly discussing art in the form of painting or photography because it is what I know- you do you!!- writing, playing music, gardening or even cooking- which is a whole other topic completely--and one of my favorites!
If I have a large block of time I will set up my easel and oil paint. This takes time to get my palette ready and the clean up is time intensive.
If I have a shorter block of time I will watercolor or take a hike in the forest with my camera and my trusty side kick ( my dog-Detective Sargent Ben Jones). When I take a hike I walk slowly and take everything in with my senses. I look at all the colors and try to guess what colors on my palette they would be. I also smell the earthy ground, pine trees and flowers. I listen to the moving water ( and for bears- I don't want to get eaten!). While I am walking I am taking pictures of anything that interests me- rocks, trees, flowers, and also interesting compositions. I usually end by picking up a souvenir, it could be a small rock, pine needles or a pine cone. I have an area in my studio for my treasures.
Now if I have little time or can't go outside, I journal. I start by watercoloring on the page, it could be the sky that day, a flower, or just interesting colors. After the page is dry I then right my down my thoughts and feelings.
If you are just beginning your creative journey, there are online classes that don't cost much for example, Domestika and Udemy. There is also my favorite book; The Artist's Way, A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity by Julia Cameron. I also find the artist communities on Facebook to be supportive and inspirational.
So put on a scarf or a fedora, clean out a small area of your home for yourself and your treasures, buy a small paint set and paper or canvas and experiment. Rules and Regulations have dimmed adults creativity from childhood- so no more rules! - get creative!!
I hope that this has inspired you, thanks for reading!
